I have been talking a lot lately about how our school system has a mandatory laptop assigned to each student beginning fifth grade. The children will keep these bad boys through high school. Although we are a digital family - this was a pretty big deal even for us. Not so much doing digital assignments because we've been doing some of that all along. This is a whole new level of responsibility; both tangibly and digitally. With this equipment came a ton of rules and regulations as well as signed agreements. The children would now be required to function and interact within a real online community. Even though there are safeguards in place - there was only a "briefing" of rules and regulations. I was hoping the training would be more in depth and not just what you can and can't do.
When I heard about “B.E. a P.R.O.” Mobile Parent Workshops I was super excited. “B.E. a P.R.O.” Is an acronym for the six pillars of success for online digital
citizenship: Balance, Ethics, Privacy, Relationships, Reputation and Online security. Through the generous support of Verizon's Digital Literacy for Families program and partnered with Internet Keep Safe Coalition as well as the California School Library Association these FREE award winning workshops will be available in the 2013-2014 school year (in select areas only).
*These are one-hour workshops delivered on premises.
*IKeepSafe trains the educator from the school who will deliver the workshop.
*Workshops are family friendly and kids are encouraged to attend.*Schools selected for a workshop will receive presenter training as well as training materials, videos, handouts and giveaways for attendees. Pizza and beverages will also be provided to create a "Family Pizza Night"
*There are only 246 slots open so space is limited
These free educational workshops are currently available to California K-12
schools to help families with young children learn important life skills for safe and responsible use of digitally-connected devices.
